Sea vs Air Freight: Choosing the Right Mode in 2026

The three levers

Every freight decision balances cost, speed, and reliability.

Sea freight (FCL & LCL)

Sea is the most economical for large volumes. Full Container Load (FCL) suits high volume; Less than Container Load (LCL) is ideal for smaller shipments that share a container.

Air freight

Air is 5-10x more expensive but dramatically faster (6-10 days). Use it for high-value, low-weight, or time-sensitive goods.

Express

Door-to-door in 3-6 days, best for samples and urgent small parcels.

A practical rule

If your landed cost difference is under 10% of margin and you need speed, pay for air. Otherwise, sea wins.
